Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare é um jogo de tiro em primeira pessoa, que se passa em tempos modernos. Ao contrário de toda a franquia, o jogo não retrata os campos de batalha da Segunda Guerra Mundial, mas, principalmente, cenários da Rússia e do Oriente Médio, nos quais o jogador assumindo o papel de militares da Força Especial britância SAS e da Force Recon, as Forças Especiais da Marinha dos EUA.

Apesar do fundo histórico ser outro, Modern Warfare mantém o mesmo ritmo de ação acelerado que consagrou a franquia, colocando o jogador em missões, em que se controla as armas do avião de ataque AC-130, e os helicópteros Blackhawk e H1 Super Cobra, além dos mais variados veículos terrestres de guerra. Como o jogo se passa em novo cenário, os fãs da franquia dispõem de um arsenal moderno, entre os quais se destacam lança-granadas, sub-metralhadoras, mísseis guiados, rifles de assalto e pistolas automáticas.

O modo multiplayer das versões para o PC, Xbox 360 e PS3, chega com um sistema inovador, no qual o jogador pode criar classes de soldados e acumular pontos de experiência ao matar os inimigos e completar objetivos de desafios. Na versão para o DS, pode haver quatro jogadores em conexão local, sem suporte para o Wi-Fi.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare se destaca como um dos shooters mais esperados da nova geração, apresentando gráficos que levam ao máximo as capacidades de hardware de cada console, com cenários e modelos de personagens realistas e uma jogabilidade fluida, principalmente, nos momentos de maior ação.
